Write Start Handwriting is a comprehensive, activity-based program in which first grade students learn handwriting and writing. In the Write Start program, occupational therapists and teachers collaborate to provide effective instruction for all students and individualized accommodations for those at risk for handwriting problems.
A developmental letter sequence using a vertical manuscript is recommended. Letter formation is modeled for all students by one of the adult instructors using short consistent verbal prompts of choice.
The Write Start Handwriting program strives to translate handwriting skills directly into the classroom. Students engage in short writing application activities from the beginning of the program, and complete longer application tasks beginning in week seven.
