Write Start Handwriting is a comprehensive, activity-based program in which first grade students learn handwriting and writing. In the Write Start program, occupational therapists and teachers collaborate to provide effective instruction for all students and individualized accommodations for those at risk for handwriting problems.

Session
Schedule

This 12-week program consists of two 45-minute sessions per week directly within the classroom.

Letter Instruction

A developmental letter sequence using a vertical manuscript is recommended. Letter formation is modeled for all students by one of the adult instructors using short consistent verbal prompts of choice. 

Small Group Learning

Students participate in small group activities to develop the underlying skills necessary for legible handwriting.

Writing Application

The Write Start Handwriting program strives to translate handwriting skills directly into the classroom. Students engage in short writing application activities from the beginning of the program, and complete longer application tasks beginning in week seven.
